RankDots doesn't just help you find keywords - it takes you all the way through to a finished, SEO-ready content document. This article walks you through the entire content creation workflow, from picking the right page opportunity to editing and exporting your final article.
The Content Creation Workflow at a Glance
Content creation in RankDots follows a clear, linear path:
- Pick a Topic > open a Page;
- Review Competition Insights for the page;
- Configure Content Settings (Brand Voice);
- Generate the Outline;
- Review and approve the outline;
- Generate the full content document;
- Edit in the Content Editor;
- Export.
Each step is described in detail below.
Step 1: Choose a Topic and Page
Start from the Topic Clusters view inside your project. Look for topics carrying the High Potential Traffic or purple Low Difficulty badges - these signal the strongest opportunities to act on first.
Click into a topic to open its Pages list. Each page represents a keyword cluster that maps to a single URL you should create or optimize on your site. Pages display their own metrics - search volume, difficulty, intent, and Easy Traffic Wins - to help you further prioritize. Choose the page you want to work on and click into it to open the Page Detail view.
Step 2: Review Competition Insights
Before generating content, study the Competition Insights (Competitors) section for your chosen page. This panel shows the top-10 SERP results currently ranking for that page's keyword cluster, including:
- Competitor URLs - the actual pages you need to outrank
- Content type - whether Google is favoring articles, landing pages, product pages, guides, etc.
- Content summary - an AI-generated description of what competitors write about
-
Target difficulty and search intent - aggregated from actual ranking pages
RankDots analyzes all competitor pages for TF-IDF keyword frequency - surfacing which keywords appear most across top-ranking pages and at what density. This data directly informs the Mapped Keywords and Recommended Keywords in the content editor later. Review this section carefully: it tells you what you need to cover and how deeply, before you write a single word.
Step 3: Configure Content Settings (Brand Voice)
Click Create Content on the page. A settings panel opens before any generation begins. These settings collectively define your Brand Voice - they are passed directly into the AI prompt and shape every aspect of the output. Configure each field carefully:
Step 4: Review and Approve the Outline
RankDots generates a structured content outline before writing the full article. The outline includes the proposed H1 title, H2 and H3 headings, and a description of what each section should cover - giving you full visibility into the document structure before committing to generation.
This is an important quality checkpoint. Review the outline for:
- Accuracy — Does the structure match what users searching for this topic actually need?
- Coverage — Are the key subtopics from the Competition Insights represented?
- Angle — Does the structure align with your brand's positioning?
You can request a revised outline if the first version doesn't meet your needs. When you're happy, click Create Content to trigger full article generation.
Step 5: Full Content Generation
Once you approve the outline, AI generates the complete content document. This includes:
- A full-length article body following the approved outline structure;
- All sections written in the configured tone, language, and style;
- Keywords naturally woven in based on the competitor TF-IDF analysis;
- A Google Snippet preview (meta title and meta description) based on the SERP data for the target keywords.
Generation typically takes between 30 seconds and 2 minutes, depending on the target word count. The finished document opens automatically in the Content Editor when complete.
Step 6: Edit in the Content Editor
The Content Editor is a rich-text environment where you can review, refine, and optimize the generated document. The editor displays several optimization tools alongside your content:
Mapped Keywords
Keywords already present in your content that match the target keyword set for this page. The goal is to ensure all primary and secondary keywords are covered naturally.
Recommended Keywords
Keywords from the top-10 competitor pages that are not yet in your content. Adding these improves topical completeness and signals to Google that your page covers the topic as thoroughly as the competition.
Optimization Rate
A score that measures how well your content covers the recommended keyword set compared to competitor benchmarks. Aim for a high optimization rate before publishing.
Google Snippet Preview
A live preview of how your page's title tag and meta description will appear in Google search results, based on the content you've written. Edit the snippet directly in the editor to optimize your click-through rate.
Editing Tips
- Add your own examples, data points, or expert commentary - AI provides the structure and keyword coverage; your expertise makes it authoritative.
- Check that all H2 and H3 headings contain relevant keywords where natural.
- Review the opening paragraph: it should immediately address the searcher's intent.
Step 7: Export
All generated documents are stored under the page's Content tab and remain accessible indefinitely while your account is active.
How many AI articles does content generation use?
Each time you generate a full content document (after approving the outline), it counts as one AI article from your monthly quota. Generating an outline alone does not consume an article credit. If you regenerate a full document for the same page, it uses an additional article credit.
Your remaining article credits are visible in your account settings. To increase your monthly limit, upgrade to a higher plan (Business: 20/month, Agency: 40/month, Enterprise: 60/month).
